Aluminum Profile T-Nut Types: Boat, Spring Ball, Spring Leaf and Slide Nuts

Which nut to use in a T-slot extrusion, which ones can be added after the frame is built, and how to order the right size.

Every bracket, panel or sensor on an aluminum extrusion frame is held by a nut that sits inside the T-slot. The nut type decides whether you can add parts after the frame is assembled and whether the nut stays in place on a vertical profile.

The common nut types

TypeHow it goes inBest for
Square slide nutSlid in from the end of the profile before the end is closedPlanned positions, simple and low cost
Spring ball nutSlid in from the end; a spring-loaded ball presses on the slotVertical profiles, where a loose nut would drop to the bottom
Spring leaf nutPressed in through the slot opening; the spring leaf holds itAdding parts to a frame that is already assembled
T-slot boat nut (hammer nut)Put in through the slot opening and turned 90 degrees to lockMounting brackets and accessories after assembly
T-boltBolt head goes into the slot, a nut tightens from outsideThrough-mounting plates and parts

Match the nut to the profile

  • Standard first. EU (European) and GB (Chinese national standard) profiles have different slot shapes, so nuts and bolts are not interchangeable between the two. An EU 2020 nut is not the same part as a nut for a non-EU 2020 profile.
  • Series next. Nuts are made per slot series (for example EU 20, EU 30, EU 40, EU 45). Use the series that matches your profile.
  • Thread last. Pick the thread (M3 to M10) that matches your screws and the bracket holes. Larger series take larger threads.

Tips that save a rebuild

  1. If you are not sure how many nuts each slot needs, put a few spare slide nuts into each slot before closing the ends.
  2. For parts you may add later, choose spring leaf or boat nuts, which go in from the front.
  3. On vertical profiles, spring-loaded nuts stop the nut from falling while you line up the bracket.
  4. Stainless (304) nuts suit damp or clean environments; zinc or nickel-plated carbon steel is the economical choice.
